Mayor of Bideford Begins Second Year in Office

The Mayor of Bideford, Councillor Peter Lawrence, delivered a heartfelt speech at the Mayor’s Introduction Ceremony on 4 June 2026, reflecting on a memorable and rewarding first year in office.

Councillor Lawrence spoke warmly about how much he had enjoyed serving as Mayor and said that, having completed his first year, he now felt more relaxed and confident in the role as he embarks on his second term. He highlighted the importance of engaging with Bideford’s younger residents and outlined his intention to spend time visiting local schools to listen to young people’s views and better understand the issues that matter most to them.

The Mayor paid special tribute to the Mayoress, Lynda Lawrence, thanking her for her unwavering support and for accompanying him to every event throughout the year.

The ceremony brought together Councillors, fellow Mayors, friends, and family members to formally recognise and celebrate Councillor Lawrence’s appointment. During the event, Councillor Ken Hind was appointed Deputy Mayor.

The Mayor was also delighted to present Citizens’ Awards to Reverend Alan Glover and Lucy Lowe in recognition of their contributions to the community. A cheque was presented to his nominated charity, The Rainbo Music Trust, while the outgoing Mayor’s Cadet, Leading Cadet Aimee Taylor, received a certificate in recognition of her service.

All award recipients were presented with beautiful bouquets created by Pontin’s Petals. The Mayor also announced the appointment of Cadet Tyler Harris as the new Mayor’s Cadet.

Councillor Lawrence expressed his sincere thanks to the members of the Bideford Town Band for providing wonderful musical entertainment during the ceremony. He also acknowledged the dedication and support of the Bideford Maintenance Team, the Town Clerk, and the Deputy Town Clerk, whose efforts help ensure the smooth running of civic events throughout the year.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered at The Royal Hotel, Bideford, for a reception to celebrate the occasion.
